Corpus Christi Electricity Rates (2025) — AEP Texas Service Territory

4 minute read · Local market guide

Corpus Christi is served by AEP Texas Central — one of four Transmission and Distribution Service Providers (TDSPs) in the deregulated Texas electricity market. AEP Texas Central covers Corpus Christi and most of the South Texas Coastal Bend, giving residents access to competing retail electricity providers and the ability to shop for the best rate.

Is Corpus Christi in the deregulated electricity market?

Yes — Corpus Christi is within the deregulated ERCOT electricity market. The eligible ZIP codes for Corpus Christi proper are 78401–78419. Residents in those ZIP codes are served by AEP Texas Central as their TDSP and can choose from multiple competing retail electricity providers.

This is not the case for all major Texas cities. Austin is served by Austin Energy and San Antonio by CPS Energy — both are regulated municipal utilities where customers cannot shop for providers. El Paso is outside ERCOT entirely. If you are unsure whether your specific address is eligible, enter your ZIP code in the search above to confirm.

AEP Texas Central service territory

AEP Texas has two separate service territories in the deregulated market: AEP Texas Central (South Texas, including Corpus Christi) and AEP Texas West (the Permian Basin and West Texas). The Corpus Christi service area includes:

  • Corpus Christi and Nueces County
  • Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley
  • Victoria, Kingsville, and the Coastal Bend
  • Parts of South Texas stretching toward the Mexican border

Because AEP Texas Central's delivery charges are regulated separately from Oncor and CenterPoint, Corpus Christi customers will see different all-in rates than Dallas or Houston customers — even when using the same retail provider.

Corpus Christi electricity usage patterns

Corpus Christi's Gulf Coast climate is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city rarely experiences the hard freezes that hit Dallas or the Panhandle, which means electricity usage is more summer-dominated than in other Texas cities:

SeasonTypical UsagePrimary Driver
Summer (May–Oct)1,300–1,900 kWhA/C — hot, humid, long season
Fall/Spring700–1,000 kWhMild temperatures
Winter (Dec–Feb)600–900 kWhMinimal heating needed

Because summer in Corpus Christi starts in May and can extend into October, annual electricity usage is heavily weighted toward the warm months. Plans with bill credits at 1,000 or 2,000 kWh can be especially valuable during the long summer cooling season.

Shopping for electricity in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi has fewer competing retail providers than the larger Dallas and Houston markets, but there are still enough options to make comparison shopping worthwhile. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive plan in the same service territory can exceed $300–$400 per year for a typical home.

  • Compare at your actual usage level — Corpus Christi homes often use more than 1,000 kWh during summer. If you regularly hit 1,500–2,000 kWh in the summer, check rates at that usage level.
  • Check the EFL for all-in rates — the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) is required by Texas law and shows the true all-in cost at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh including AEP Texas delivery charges.
  • Lock in before summer — retail rates typically rise heading into summer peak demand. Signing a fixed-rate contract in early spring can lock in lower rates before the seasonal increase.
