Why commercial businesses use an energy broker
Rates not listed on Power to Choose
The state's public comparison site only lists residential plans. Commercial rates are negotiated separately — you can't see them without a broker.
Volume buying power
We aggregate commercial accounts across multiple providers, which gives us access to rates that individual businesses cannot negotiate on their own.
No conflict of interest
We are compensated by the provider at enrollment — not by paid placements. The cheapest plan for your account is always the one we recommend.
Contract and renewal management
We track your contract expiration and reach out before it lapses so you never roll onto an expensive default variable rate.
How commercial electricity pricing works in Texas
Energy charge vs. demand charge
Commercial bills in Texas typically include both an energy charge (¢/kWh for total consumption) and a demand charge ($/kW for peak demand during the billing period). Residential bills only have the energy charge. Demand charges reward businesses that maintain steady usage throughout the month rather than spiking at peak times.
TDSP delivery charges billed separately
Unlike residential plans where delivery is bundled into the quoted rate, commercial customers often see the TDSP transmission and distribution charges listed separately on their bill. When comparing commercial quotes, always clarify whether the quoted rate includes TDSP charges or is energy-only.
Load factor and pricing
Load factor is the ratio of your average demand to your peak demand. A business that uses electricity steadily (high load factor) gets better rates than one with large spikes. Restaurants, for example, often have lower load factors than office buildings — which affects the rates providers offer.
Contract terms for commercial accounts
Commercial electricity contracts typically run 12–36 months. Longer terms often provide more price certainty but less flexibility. For businesses with predictable usage patterns, a 24-month fixed contract often provides the best combination of rate and stability.
Frequently asked questions
Can Texas businesses choose their electricity provider?
Yes. Businesses in the deregulated ERCOT electricity market — including most of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, and surrounding areas — can choose their retail electricity provider. Commercial customers in Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, and LP&L service territories are eligible.
How are commercial electricity rates different from residential rates?
Commercial electricity rates are typically quoted on a per-kWh energy-only basis, with TDSP transmission and delivery charges billed separately. Commercial pricing also accounts for demand charges (peak kW draw), load factor, and business type — factors that do not appear on residential bills. This complexity is why commercial customers benefit from using an energy broker.
Is the rate shopping service free for businesses?
Yes. Our commercial rate shopping service is completely free to businesses. We are compensated by the electricity provider when a business enrolls — similar to how a mortgage broker is paid at closing. You pay nothing for the service and are under no obligation.
What size businesses can you help?
We work with businesses of all sizes — from small offices using 2,000 kWh/month to large industrial accounts using over 100,000 kWh/month. Larger accounts with higher usage typically see the greatest dollar savings from rate shopping.
Ready to lower your business electricity costs?
Most Texas businesses are overpaying for electricity. The average commercial account saves 10–20% after a competitive rate review — with no disruption to service.
